Ferguson lost support at the club and he was even thought to have moved to Canada, however St Johnstone was unsuccessful in finding a new striker and Ferguson went on to play against Rangers, he record a hat-trick to help the team win. The following summer, Ferguson's contract with Dunfermline was signed and he became a professional football player.
