The Romans used the military to deprive Illyria of autonomy in 165 BC. Unicorn your aunt my aunt shirt. Roman Albania was connected to Via Egnatia, the Roman road linking the east to the west and Rome with the rich far east of the empire. After being conquered by the Roman Empire, Illyria was reorganized into a Roman province. Illyricum was later divided into the provinces of Dalmatia and Pannonia, the lands that make up Albania today. Many Illyria in Roman rule gained important positions in the Roman Imperial Guards (Prætorian Guard). The Albanian language borrowed a lot of Latin words, mainly about religion and sacrifices. This was because the original Albanian was in the Holy See, although Catholicism was first propagated to Albanians by the Apostle himself the first time he went to Durazzo. During the first decades of Byzantine rule (until 461), Illyria suffered many devastating attacks by Visigoths, Huns, and Ostrogoths. Shortly after these invaders swept through the Balkans, the Slavs appeared. Between the sixth and the eighth centuries they settled in Illyria territories and gradually assimilated Illyria tribes in places now Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia. However, the tribes of southern Illyria, including today's Albania, avoided assimilation and preserved their language. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Albania was included in the Byzantine Empire, under the control of Constantinople. Albania was under Byzantine control until the fourteenth century AD when Ottoman Turks launched attacks on the Empire. The Ottomans occupied Constantinople in 1453, and by 1460 almost all of the former Byzantine territory had fallen into the hands of the Turks.
